Alaungdaw Kathapa National Park

Alaungdaw Kathapa National Park

Located 1,570 km (975 mi) north/northwest of Yangon (Rangoon) near Mingin Township in the Sagaing Division, the 1,605 km2 (620 sq. mi) Alaungdaw Kathapa is best known for the large herds of Asian elephants that roam there. Approximately 200 of the beasts call the park home, usually traveling in herds of up to a dozen individuals. Other breathtaking wildlife include the elusive clouded leopard (as well as several other jungle cats such as civets), the endangered Burmese brow-antlered deer (also known as Thamin), barking deer, several species of bears (including the Himalayan brown bear and sun bear) and giant monitor lizards. The park is also home to one of the most spectacular pilgrimage sites in all of Myanmar. Many believe Alaungdaw Kathapa Pagoda is where the body of Shin Maha Kathapa is enshrined. One of the Buddha’s original followers, Shin Maha Kathapa is said to have become enlightened during his lifetime. The Alaungdaw Kathapa Pagoda Festival is held each year around the full moon of the lunar month of Tabodwe (usually in February). Pilgrims climb 30 m (100 Ft) down into a ravine to the cave where it is said the holy man is entombed. The pagoda is all but unreachable during Myanmar’s monsoon season from May through October, however

Kyauktalon Taung is an interesting flat rock formation 300 feet in height with a Buddhist shrine situated on top. Although reminding you of Mt. Just opposite Kyauktalon Taung is Yadana Taung and the entrance to a Hindu temple where literally hundreds of monkeys roam about freely. And it’s also an escape route to beat the unbearable heat of Manadalay’s summer. An early morning is the best time to visit so that you can avoid the heat and the influx of tourists. There are several ways to ascend the hill, depending on how fit you are. You can climb up from the South side or alternatively, you can get a taxi about halfway up on a road that leads from the West. In truth, it’s not too difficult a climb and there are plenty of places to stop and sit along the way. Take note that you will need to remove your shoes while climbing to the top of the hill from the check point where your transporting car stops. No entrance fee is required but a small amount of camera fee is expected. Thanboddhay Paya

Thanboddhay Paya

Thanboddhay Paya is slightly Disneylandesque, in a Burmese style. Well, perhaps that's a bit harsh, but there's certainly a kitsch theme park vibe to this popular attraction roughly halfway to the super gigantic standing Buddha (Bodhi Tataung) from Monywa. The compound is a series of garishly painted buildings, but the main attraction (admission US$3 for foreigners) supposedly houses in excess of 500,000 Buddha images. Yes, you read that number right -- half a million. Plenty of chedis too! Built in 1939 and completed in 1952, Thanboddhay Paya remains an active place of worship and you'll come across devotees throughout the place. It is also the site of a temple festival in November each year. The vast number of icons are photogenic and stopping here conveniently breaks the journey from Monywa to Bodhi Tataung. Once you're done, push on to what was, for a period, the tallest standing image of Buddha in the world, Bodhi Tataung. It is absolutely colossal. When we arrived in Monywa we knew nothing of Bodhi Tataung and it was only when inspecting an upper floor room at Hotel Chindwin that we spied its sparkling edifice in the distance. When we asked, the staffer told us it was, “The almost tallest Buddha in the world!” So of course we checked it out. It's the almost-tallest Buddha in the world, but also home to an enormous reclining Buddha, and thousands of Buddha images in the surrounding area. While it's easy to turn your nose up at the site being a “new money monument”, at the rate both the standing and reclining Buddha are ageing, they'll look like ruins in a few more years. Up close and personal.

Burma under British colonial time was famous for three things; pagodas, teak and jade. Make no mistake Myanmar jade is the best in the world. This huge Jade Market in central Mandalay showcases perfectly why it is so. Dozens of vendors are selling their jade in various stages and grades of presentation. Not frequently visited by tourists, it generally serves as a local source of the product. As always, there were “mobile” vendors, with little gem boxes of ruby and emerald speciments, in the rough, cab and facet cut. There is no issue at all with failure to purchase their goodies. Entrance fee is less tha US$ 1.
