Gokteik Bridge

Natma Taung (Mount Victoria)
To the locals, it is known as Khaw-nu-soum or Khonuamthung. Given its height and being surrounded at lower elevations by tropical and subtropical moist forests, Nat-ma Taung rises above as an alpine “sky island”. More than a century ago, during the British colonial era, it was called Mount Victoria, named in honour of Queen Victoria. It is located in Kan-pet-let Township, Mindat District, Chin State, on the western part of Myanmar and is part of the Chin Hills range. In 1994, the government designated 72,300 hectares of the Chin Hills including Nat-ma Taung as a national park, an important site for wildlife conservation. In February 2004, Nat-ma Taung National Park was identified as a “priority candidate” for recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its outstanding plant and animal life which is highly diverse and provides insight to the biogeographical history of Asia. It is also home to multiple threatened birds, mammals and reptiles. It is an ASEAN Heritage Park and was listed as an Alliance for Zero Extinction Site because of the White-browed Nuthatch, which is endemic to Nat-ma Taung National Park.

It is a town a few kilometers north of Inle Lake in the Shan State of Myanmar. It is located south of Sakangyi and southwest of Taunggyi. Bawrithat Pagoda lies in the southern part of the town. Nyaung Shwe is the tourist hub for visiting Inle Lake and Inlay Lake Wetland Sanctuary. It consists of one main thoroughfare with numerous side streets and a few parallel roads. The main street has numerous shops, several restaurants, a few stupas, travel agencies and a market (located behind the storefronts). Near the end of this road, a bridge crosses the river channel near an impressive mirror-tiled stupa. The town serves as a marina for the numerous long boats carrying tourists into the lake. It is a town and major seaport in Rakhine State, the westernmost part of Myanmar. Thandwe is very ancient, and is said to have been at one time the capital of Rakhine State, then called Arakan. The district has an area of 3,784 square miles (9,800 km2). The country is mountainous, the Arakan Mountains sending out spurs which reach the coast. Some of the peaks in the north attain 4,000 and more ft. The streams are only mountain torrents to within a few miles of the coast; the mouth of the Khwa forms a good anchorage for vessels of from 9 to 10 ft (3.0 m). draught. The rocks in the Arakan Range and its spurs are metamorphic, and comprise clay, slates, ironstone and indurated sandstone; towards the south, ironstone, trap and rocks of basaltic character are common; veins of steatite and white fibrous quartz are also found. The rainfall in 1905 was 23-49 in. Except a few acres of tobacco, all the cultivation is rice.
